AVOID TIRE BLOWOUTS: WHAT TO LOOK FOR

May 15, 2024

A few quick tricks on what to look, listen and feel for can help keep your  tires  alive longer. Knowing what to look for can prevent any major blow-outs leaving you stranded on the side of the road.

Keep the Pressure Up

Inflate inflate inflate! Always keep your tires inflated to the manufacturer recommended PSI printed on a sticker in the door jam of the driver’s side door. The PSI stamped into your tire’s sidewall is the maximum pressure the tire can withstand. Under-inflation is the most common cause of a blowout. Keeping your tires at the proper pressure will also help you get the best gas mileage possible. Win for your car, and your wallet!

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

Most vehicles made after 2007 have a pressure monitoring system that will warn you if any of the tires go lower than the specified amount. One problem however, is that it may not warn you if you’re just slightly under-inflated, and even that small amount can do damage over time. It’s a good idea to manually check the tires once a month.

Normal vs Abnormal Wear

Over time  tires’ tread is worn down. Rotating them ensures all 4 wear evenly since the front two will wear down much faster than on the rear. But there are many factors that effect tread wear. Tread wear patterns give important warning signs about a larger problem. Over inflation will show more wear in the middle, under-inflation on the edges, and alignment problems show up in several ways as illustrated. So as you’re checking the pressure, run a hand over the tread to feel for anything out of the ordinary.

Age Matters

The tread thickness is one way to gage a tires condition, but many don’t know that the age is just as important. Rubber is subject to weather and road conditions, and tires are no exception. Tires are considered to be unsafe after 6 years. See the image below to interpret your tires’ age.

Trick to Gauge Depth

Check your tire’s tread depth by inserting an upside down penny between the treads. If you can see any room above President Lincoln’s head, the tire should be replaced. Happy driving during this summer road trip season, and as always feel free to call us for all your tire sales and repair needs!

Did you know that your engine’s health depends heavily on routine oil maintenance? Many vehicle owners overlook the importance of regular oil changes, but skipping them can lead to costly repairs and even engine failure. The best way to extend the life of your engine is by maintaining proper oil levels, using the correct oil type, and scheduling routine oil changes. Neglecting oil maintenance can result in overheating, poor fuel efficiency, and increased wear and tear. In this blog, we’ll discuss the importance of oil changes, how often they should be performed, and tips for keeping your engine running smoothly for years to come. If your car is due for an oil change, schedule an appointment with Dana Meyer Auto Care today! Why Oil Maintenance is Essential Engine oil acts as a lubricant, reducing friction between moving parts and preventing excessive heat buildup. Over time, oil breaks down and collects contaminants, making it less effective. Dirty or low oil levels can lead to increased engine wear, reduced performance, and potential breakdowns. Regular oil changes: Help prevent sludge buildup Improve fuel efficiency Reduce engine wear and tear Keep internal components properly lubricated Ignoring routine oil changes can cause your engine to work harder than necessary, leading to costly repairs. At Dana Meyer Auto Care, we ensure your vehicle receives top-quality oil and a full inspection to keep it running smoothly. How Often Should You Change Your Oil? The frequency of oil changes depends on several factors, including your vehicle's make and model, driving habits, and the type of oil used. General guidelines for oil changes: Conventional oil: Every 3,000 to 5,000 miles Synthetic blend oil: Every 5,000 to 7,500 miles Full synthetic oil: Every 7,500 to 10,000 miles However, if you frequently drive in stop-and-go traffic, extreme weather conditions, or tow heavy loads, you may need to change your oil more often. Not sure when your last oil change was? Stop by Dana Meyer Auto Care in Albany, CA, and our ASE-certified technicians will check your oil levels and recommend the best maintenance schedule for your vehicle. Choosing the Right Oil for Your Vehicle Not all motor oils are the same, and using the wrong type can negatively impact your engine’s performance. Your vehicle’s manufacturer specifies the best oil for optimal efficiency. Types of Engine Oil: Conventional Oil: Best for older vehicles or light-duty driving. Synthetic Blend Oil: A mix of conventional and synthetic oil, offering better protection. Full Synthetic Oil: Ideal for high-performance and modern vehicles, providing maximum protection and efficiency. High-Mileage Oil: Designed for vehicles with 75,000+ miles, reducing oil consumption and leaks. If you’re unsure about the best oil for your car, our experts at Dana Meyer Auto Care will recommend the right option to keep your engine running at peak performance. Signs You Need an Oil Change Even if you’re following a recommended oil change schedule, certain warning signs indicate it’s time to replace your oil sooner. Look out for these signs: ✔ Dark, dirty oil – Fresh oil is amber in color; if it’s black or gritty, it’s time for a change. ✔ Loud engine noise or knocking – Poor lubrication increases friction, causing excessive engine noise. ✔ Oil change light or check engine light – Your vehicle’s warning system detects low oil levels or poor oil quality. ✔ Exhaust smoke – Excessive smoke from your tailpipe can indicate oil contamination. ✔ Burning oil smell – If you smell oil inside your car, there may be a leak or an overheating engine. If you experience any of these issues, don’t wait! Bring your vehicle to Dana Meyer Auto Care for a thorough oil inspection and service. Best Practices for Oil Maintenance Keeping up with oil maintenance is simple when you follow these best practices: Check your oil levels monthly. Look at the dipstick to ensure there’s enough oil and that it’s clean. Use the recommended oil for your vehicle. The right oil ensures optimal lubrication and efficiency.
